Moar Bento!

Sundays have turned into Bento Day (really, only about half an hour to an hour after church).  I've only eaten out three times for lunch since starting to use a bento box for lunches a few weeks ago.  I'm putting more effort into getting things ready for the week so I can easily pack the box in the evenings.  I'm enjoying lunch a lot more, and an added bonus is that I've noticed one pair of pants and a skirt I wear a lot are a little baggier.

I cooked an entire box of Ronzoni Smart Pasta and divided it into one-cup servings, which I froze separately and have bagged in the freezer.  One serving, with a tablespoon or two of pesto or marinara, makes a decent entree.  I did the same thing with spaghetti squash, and bought a bag of small, frozen turkey meatballs.  The spaghetti squash also gets the pesto or marinara treatment, but I add the meatballs for protein.  I've been taking the marinara in a separate container because heating tomato sauce in plastic food containers sometimes damages the container.

Sunday is vegetable-and-fruit-preparation day.  I slice apples and pears, and put them into storage containers in the refrigerator with some lemon juice sprinkled on to keep them from browning.  I slice peppers and store them, and get lettuce torn and washed, then stored.  Last week, I made a fresh green bean salad.  This week, I chopped celery and peppers and mixed them with soybeans and dressing to make a French-style bean salad.

Fresh Green Bean Salad

Fresh green (string) beans
Grape tomatoes (or tomatoes seeded and cut into strips)
Red onion, cut into thin strips

Wash the beans and cut off the ends, then cut into bite-size pieces.  I like to use a Chinese cut-and-roll technique that gives me slanted ends on the pieces--to do it, line up the beans and cut across them at an angle, roll your hand across to turn them a bit, then cut again at an angle, and so on.  Put the beans in a microwave-safe dish and microwave for a couple of minutes.  You'll have to do this to suit your taste; I like mine very raw and crunchy, but you can soften your beans as much as you want.  Drain the beans.  Cut and seed the grape tomatoes, or use them whole, whatever you like.  Toss the tomatoes and onions in with the beans.  You can use a commercial balsamic viniagrette dressing, or make your own:  Combine olive oil (I like extra-virgin for dressings because of the taste), balsamic vinegar, a little minced garlic, and salt and pepper in a small container with a lid, and shake before using.  This bean salad is tasty and filling, and it's a break from plain lettuce salads.

French Bean Salad

1 can cooked soybeans
1 celery stalk, diced
1/4 each red or yellow and green bell pepper, diced
Commercial French herb blend (or thyme, tarragon, garlic, onion powder, parsley, etc.)

Wash and drain the beans to get the canning juice off them.  Combine everything in a bowl and mix (I use herbs to taste--but maybe a half teaspoon of each thing or three teaspoons of the blend).  You can use the same balsamic viniagrette for this as for the green bean salad, or something different if you're making both salads the same week.  I used the balsamic this week, but I have some Girard's Champagne Viniagrette that I'm thinking of trying next time.  The classic French bean salad uses small white beans, but soybeans have a little more protein, I think.  Soybeans are a natural plant estrogen, so if you're eating a lot of soy, you could switch back to the small white beans.

I acutally chopped two celery stalks and twice as much of the peppers as for the salad recipe, and used half of it for the salad and half to mix with a can of tuna.  A great plus to using tuna is that it not only supplies lean protein and Omega 3, you get exercise fighting off the cat.  I have a 20-pound Maine Coon, and he is a freaking annoying persistent animal, so I'm figuring I burned a few calories.

Product Review: Laptop Lunches Bento Kit

I looked at a lot of Bento boxes and finally bought one from Laptop Lunches (www.laptoplunches.com). Their Bento boxes are Americanized versions of the traditional Japanese concept. Geared at first toward kids, the kit is a basic plastic box with grooves in the bottom where containers go, several plastic containers that fit inside, and a separate space for the metal fork and spoon that come with the box. Three of the containers have lids and are intended for wet food (two containers) and dressing or dip (a third, smaller lidded container); two are open and intended for drier (or, non-leaky) foods. The lunch box lid keeps things in place in the open containers, and the whole thing fits together pretty snugly.


Laptop Lunches has several options, some very elaborate with carrying bags, water bottles, hot food containers, cloth napkins, shaped food cutters, etc. These get a little pricey for a lunch box. I probably wouldn’t spend close to $70 for a child’s lunch box, or mine, for that matter, but truthfully, some of the higher-end ones look more like something an adult would have, anyway. For $25, you get the box, five containers (three with lids), a metal fork and spoon, and an insulated fabric holder/cover. Oh, and a 94-page paperback “User’s Guide” that has nutritional information, recipes, menus and lunch ideas. There are a number of interesting color combinations; I went with the more traditional Japanese black and red. My box is black, the containers are red, and the cover is black with a red and white “tire tread” plaid design.

The quality of the box is decent. The lids fit the containers well, the covered containers don’t leak, there aren’t any rough edges on the flatware, and the fabric cover seems well-made. The Velcro closure goes all the way across the tab that closes the cover; this could have been handled more cheaply with an inadequate Velcro dot, so the generous Velcro is a nice touch. The insulation on the cover is pretty thick, and it’s waterproof. The containers stand up to microwaving, though to be honest, I’ve only microwaved at half power. The lids are not microwavable; the company says they’re not, and I took them at their word and didn’t try it. The company says the containers, but not the lids, are dishwasher safe, but I’ve been washing mine by hand. The only thing I could criticize, and trust me, I’m very good at criticizing, is that I can see the plastic hinge on the box giving way at some point. It’s just a thinner, kind of scored plastic, hinge, the kind you see on pencil boxes and etc.

The book that comes with the kit has some interesting ideas in it (my cucumber cups stuffed with tuna was an idea from the book). It’s strongly geared toward kids being raised in vegetarian families, in an almost evangelistic way, but the nutrition is good and a lot of the ideas seem like they would make delicious lunch components for kids or adults. They get points for hammering one of my pet peeves, peanut butter that has hydrogenated oil and sugar in it (I’m a “just peanuts and salt” aficionado). That greased-up stuff is an abomination; eat real peanut butter!

The system is meant to be green, which is another plus. The idea is that by using re-usable containers and flatware, and the box, we won’t be using up a lot of plastic bags or wrap, or paper lunch bags. This is good reasoning. You can also purchase cloth napkins, and there’s room in the flatware compartment for a cloth napkin, to further avoid wasting paper. I plan to pick up a napkin at a discount shop in my neighborhood, but the ones sold on the site are pretty reasonable. I do love the idea of using cloth napkins. They are civilized. When my daughter was growing up, we always ate dinner at the dinner table, with cloth napkins.

All in all, I like the Laptop Lunches Bento Kit, and would buy more of their products.

Bento

Tired of protein bars, the 3-4 different salads offered at the cafeteria at work, and the odd can of Progresso soup tossed into my briefcase with an apple, I decided to start putting a little more effort into lunch. As is usual for me, my call to action involved a few kicks in the pants sources of inspiration.


I was inspired a bit by The Gospel of Food by Barry Glassner. According to Glassner, a study of people eating food they liked and food they didn’t like had some interesting results: people absorbed less iron when they didn’t like their food, and absorbed significantly more iron when they did like their food. This got my attention. Always worried about weight, I don’t like my food much a lot of the time; I’m eating what I think I can have rather than what I would like to have. And, I have to admit that I don’t put much effort into my food since it’s often not what I’d really like to eat. Hence, the protein bars and my friends referring to my usual diet as “Perpetual Lent.” I’m chronically anemic and can’t seem to absorb iron no matter what I do, so any talk about iron absorption is going to get my ears to prick up. And, I hate my iron pills. The smell of them makes me gag, now, after several years of taking massive doses of them and subsequently having gastric issues. (I’m wondering now if hating them so much is interfering with being able to absorb them…)

I guess I could try eating some of the other food at the cafeteria, but I don’t trust the guy who runs it. He’s a nice enough guy, an Italian New York transplant with a lot of restaurant experience, and the food he makes is really good. But, I’ve caught him selling “Atkins Friendly Wraps” that are made with regular tortillas (I know because I’ve ordered one and seen the tortilla being taken from a regular tortilla package) and he tells people that his mayonnaise is low-fat, and I’ve seen the sandwich maker refreshing the mayonnaise from an industrial-sized jar of regular Best Foods. A lot of the cafeteria food is breaded and etc., too, which is not great, and a couple of years ago I lost 11 pounds doing nothing but stopping eating lunch in the cafeteria.

I was reading A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter, and loved the description of Elnora’s lunch box and all the goodies her mother and Maggie packed into it. I started looking around at different styles of lunch boxes, looking for a modern equivalent, and stumbled upon Bento boxes. They are cool.

Bento is a Japanese style of food presentation in which food is served in a box, or stacking boxes, with different compartments. Imagine that! Instead of a can of soup or a protein bar, I can have a lunch with several small courses. That’s very cool.

So far, I’ve taken lunch every day for a week, and liked it. I’m really enjoying my lunches, which have been accompanied by an interesting feeling of well-being. This is probably some artifact of earliest childhood, but I feel kind of loved knowing a nice lunch with freshly prepared, interesting food is waiting for me. I haven’t wanted to snack between breakfast and lunch, and that’s saying a lot considering that it’s after the holidays and everyone at work is bringing in all their post-holiday leftover crap to get it out of the house so they don’t eat it. There’s a definite psychological effect, too, to opening the box and seeing the little boxes there filled with good stuff. It feels special, even though it’s still healthy stuff and I know what’s in there because I packed it myself, and some of it is leftovers. I’m definitely enjoying my lunch, and hopefully absorbing iron!

I have been a little adventurous. I cut the ends off cucumbers and hollowed them out, and filled them with tuna salad. That was interesting and cool. I threw some diced pear and minced pecan into some Greek yogurt and drizzled honey across the top. Both of those experiments were very tasty.



This is my lunch from earlier in the week. Clockwise from the bottom left: leftover Cock-a-Leekie Soup, tuna salad on shredded romaine lettuce, sliced red and green peppers, and fresh pineapple. I left the small dip container out of this lunch because I didn’t need it. The soup and pineapple are in the lidded containers, with the lids removed for the photo. It really is nice to open the box and see a decent lunch, and everything stayed put. Because of the containers and the snug lid on the outer box, everything was pretty much where I placed it when I made the lunch—no wayward bits wandering into other dishes, no bunched-up salad with the tuna at one end and the lettuce at the other.

Ratatouille

I like to be healthy (well, as healthy as I can be), and diet is a big part of that. Fresh food, lovingly prepared, and all that.

I also love gadgets. I’ve had my eye on a bento-style lunch box for a while. It’s a box with little compartments for salad, dessert/fruit, sandwich or main dish, etc., just like Elnora’s lunch box in A Girl of the Limberlost. I don’t want to buy a fancy lunch box if I’m just going to slide back into grabbing a protein bar or going to the cafeteria for a salad, thereby clogging up my cupboards with an unused gadget. So, I need to start getting lunch ready more than five minutes before I have to leave for work.

I’m sick of protein bars and shakes, and sick of the available salads at the cafeteria at work as well as the cool tuna-and-romaine salad with olive oil, garlic, and lemon dressing that I eat quite often. Plus, it’s the Bleak Midwinter, people! I want something hot.

Time to go on a cooking spree.

Mr. Plain is a junk food junkie, and he’s home during the day and I work, and our kids are adults, so there’s not much reason for me to cook. But. Spurred on by the specter of ratatouille and roast chicken, I went into cooking overdrive.

I peeled and cubed a couple of pears into a largish ramekin, dotted them with a tiny amount of butter and sprinkled them with raw, coarse sugar, then popped them into the toaster oven at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes. Dessert for two days accomplished.

I loosened the skin on a fresh chicken, mixed butter, garlic, and thyme, and worked it under the skin along the breast and on the tops of the drumsticks. A little extra got rubbed on the outside of the skin, the legs were tied, then the whole thing was tented with foil and put into the fridge. Mr. Plain will roast it tomorrow night for dinner, because we’re having leftovers from Christmas dinner today. Roast chicken leftovers will also be good for a couple of days of lunches, as I’m the only person in the house who likes white meat.

On to the ratatouille. I started cutting my two eggplant and realized I have lost my chopping mojo when my vegetable cleaver slipped and I sliced into my hand. Ouch! Off to the first aid kit to wash, peroxide, and…find out we have run out of Band-Aids. Off to Walgreens with Mr. Plain driving and me with a paper towel wrapped around my hand. We Plains always travel in style.

At Walgreens, I hopped off to the first aid aisle while applying pressure to the paper towel fashionably wrapped around my hand. I used the “St. Elsewhere Twist,” my favorite look when bleeding profusely after clumsily slicing off part of my anatomy. I grabbed some Band-Aids, paint-on invisible bandage stuff, and butterfly closures. Then, I breezed past the cosmetics aisle because my hand had stopped bleeding (due to the magical presence of Band-Aids, no doubt—just holding them creates miracles), and also because they were having a sale, I ran out of Bare Minerals blush and one of my eye shadow colors a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t be arsed to order more, and because, well, why waste a trip?

This is post-first-aid.  And slightly out of focus.

Back home, appropriately taped together, I got back to the ratatouille. I had single-handedly (literally) put the eggplant cubes into a colander placed over a bowl, and sprinkled them liberally with kosher salt. I put off both bleeding to death and heading out for bandages because draining the eggplant is an important step, and it takes time, and…why waste time, right?

On our return home, the eggplant had drained nicely; there was about half a cup of brown juice in the bowl. I tossed this out and rinsed the eggplant to remove the salt; peeled, seeded and chopped the tomatoes, chopped the zucchini; seeded and chopped the bell pepper; chopped and caramelized the onion in olive oil. I dumped everything else in with the onions, added garlic and thyme leaves, half a can of stock and a cup of red wine, and decided to add Kalamara olives after it’s all done cooking. I used a pot that could go stovetop to oven, but decided to use the crock pot instead so I wouldn’t have to babysit the thing in the oven.


Yes, this is the world's oldest, cheapest crockpot.  Why do you ask?


So, here is a photo of the not-quite-finished product.  I'll freeze some and take the rest to work this week.  Mr. Plain doesn't like eggplant, my daughter is off visiting friends, and stepson has not had anything green since a few weeks after his birth, so this stuff is mine, all mine!  After the vegetables are cooked, I'll remove the sauce and reduce it by about half to intensify the flavor.

True Grit

Note: I hope there aren’t any more spoilers here than you’d see in any critique or analysis of True Grit. The story is an old one, and, I think, familiar to many people, but I’ve tried not to include any outright spoilers.


I saw True Grit on Christmas Eve. I own the DVD of and have seen the 1969 John Wayne/Glen Campbell/Kim Darby version many times, and I've read the book. The novel and the two films are all slightly different. If you know all three, there’s an effect similar to having three family members all tell the same story. It’s the same story, but with different parts emphasized, left out, or added by each storyteller.

True Grit is one of my favorite stories. I love the story of Mattie Ross deciding to take on the role of heading up her family, and embarking on an adventure with the goal of avenging her father’s murder. She has only a rough idea of what it will take, other than the titular “grit,” but she forges ahead, anyway.

It’s easy to characterize True Grit as a coming-of-age story, or a revenge story, but it’s both, and more. Mattie does a lot of growing up, she avenges her father, and she learns that life isn’t as easy as she expects it to be. Mattie starts out (well, and ends up, too, if we’re being honest) with a lot of rules. Her Protestant fundamentalist approach to life is fenced in with puritanical rules meant to protect her from the harshness of life, at the beginning of the story, Mattie expects these rules, which have worked in her fairly sheltered life as her father’s sidekick at their ranch, to work just the same way everywhere else.

In town, after her father’s death, the rules work a little. Mattie is still around people familiar with her family’s rules because many of them share similar religious backgrounds, if not exactly the same background. She is able to intimidate people into bargaining with her, her way, and she admirably leaves town better off than she was when she arrived. Her stubbornness carries the day in terms of her ability to find and hire Rooster Cogburn. Mattie is still in a world where some of the rules apply, and where those that don’t can be overcome with sheer tenacity in many cases, but she’s beginning to see that things are a little different outside the more controlled environment of her family home.

Mattie really is in for some interesting times when the group goes into the wild, the Indian territory, in pursuit of Tom Chaney. No one in the territory, it seems, cares much about the rules around which Mattie has shaped her expectations of the world. The territory is full of outlaws, and, worse, gray areas where the rules don’t fit. She meets people like Moon, who grew up right but turned out wrong, unlike his preacher brother. She’s forced to shoot Tom Chaney, who doesn’t make it back to civilization to be served up justice by the rules. But, she makes it, almost in one piece, and her voice in the book is that of a woman, not a girl. A woman with true grit.

I think I like this story so much because I grew up much like Mattie, with my parents’ and church’s fundamentalist rules having been fed to me as a reality that works universally and unfailingly. Leaving home for the outside world was rough, and got rougher after my first husband decided to divorce his submissive wife. The wilderness is a very good metaphor for being completely cut loose from everything familiar, a person believes is safe, and everything a person has been taught about how life works.  The lessons in True Grit, as a coming-of-age story, can be applicable to anyone leaving a sheltered environment, under whatever circumstances, and facing with the outside world for the first time.

The True Grit story has now been told three different ways, but the meaning survives the different treatments.

The 1969 film, with John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, Glen Campbell as LeBoeuf, and Kim Darby as Mattie, is endearing and well-done, though it deviates from the novel. Mattie is much more cheerful than the way she is portrayed in the novel, and, of course, she doesn’t lose her arm. All three of the main players do a great job, and, of course, John Wayne won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the drunken US Marshal.

The Coen brothers' "remake" is a different take on the same story; it’s really a different film, which is why I put “remake” in quotation marks. It's a bit truer to Charles Portis' novel than the 1969 film, and a little darker, though there are a few humorous spots.  It’s got the Coen brothers’ trademark mix of dark and light humor and violence, though there is no violence that doesn't advance the story. It intersects in a few spots with the 1969 version, but is a different retelling of the story. All of the important particulars are intact, including the bittersweet ending of the novel rather than the happier ending of the 1969 film. The “rat writ” scene, which I liked, from the 1969 version is gone, but there is a funny, impromptu marksmanship contest that is pretty funny.

Jeff Bridges does a great job as Rooster Cogburn. I didn't see him channeling The Dude, as several people have complained; in fact, his performance was a little more reminiscent of his role as Bad Blake in Crazy Heart, probably because of the alcoholism both characters share. Matt Damon also did a great job as LeBoeuf, and the actress playing Mattie Ross was spectacular. In many ways, though I love Kim Darby's performance in the 1969 version, Hailee Steinfeld's portrayal was truer to the puritanical, and more importantly, gritty Mattie of the novel. I was completely prepared to dislike her, but couldn't. There definitely is portrayed, and portrayed well, the growing loss of innocence as Mattie is exposed to life outside of the Ross family ranch. She begins the movie as a young girl with grit and innocence, and ends up a young woman with grit and life experience.

Josh Brolin's portayal of Tom Chaney was brilliant. I liked it much better than the way the character was portrayed in the 1969 version. He plays Chaney in a way that is as slow, dark, and latently malevolent as poisoned molasses. Brolin’s Chaney is creepy enough that one wonders how Frank Ross could have hired him in the first place, but it still seems reasonable, given Mattie’s expectations that people conform to “the rules,” which she could only have gotten from her parents, that her father might have overridden his reservations and hired Chaney anyway.

The 2010 True Grit is an entity in its own right, and a good one. It's an honest effort that deserves to be considered on its own merits. I plan to buy the DVD when it comes out, and I'll probably watch both versions equally and love them both.

The Butterfly Effect

Ah, genetics. The fault, dear Horatio, is not in our stars, but in our genes.

I don’t gamble; I can’t stand what is, to me, the decision to just throw money away. I’m not a lucky person. I’m a person who will methodically try every possible path in the labyrinth until one leads out. That’s the only thing that has ever worked for me, and I rely upon it.

If our genes can be compared to a hand of cards that we’re dealt in life, I’m screwed destined to life as an autoimmune disorder patient. Every female on the maternal side of my family, myself included, has had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, an autoimmune hypothyroid disorder. My body makes antibodies that attack the thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the throat that controls metabolism. I suspect my sister, who won’t get tested, has it as well. My brother has Psoriasis, an autoimmune skin disorder, which comes with its own special version of autoimmune arthritis. So, the Force is strong in my family /end sarcasm.

It’s very rare for autoimmune disorders to strike preschoolers. I chalk that up to the stress of our incredibly dysfunctional family life, which I’ll get to later. Film at 11.

Before my fifth birthday, I became “the fat kid” overnight. That would have been the first of many thyroid crises. They are scary. During one of the scariest, when I was working on my undergraduate degree, I was running 35 miles each week and eating only three small bowls of rice a day, and gaining a pound a day. The terror this generated was what prompted me to insist to yet another gatekeeping GP that I be sent to an endocrinologist. That guy, God bless him, found a goiter that he estimated to be around 20 years old judging by how fibrous it was. At that same appointment, I was given a prescription for thyroid medication and the correct test for diagnosing hypothyroidism. At the next appointment, I learned the test had been positive. I was ecstatic. Finally, what I’d known all along was validated—I had a thyroid problem. I wasn’t lying to myself about how much I was eating, or exaggerating how much I was exercising. I wasn’t imagining a choking feeling in my throat all the time; that was the goiter. I was 25 when I was first diagnosed.

That visit started a long journey toward finding the right thyroid treatment for me. I didn’t feel right on synthetic thyroid medication, but had to fight to get the appropriate dosage and to be placed on natural thyroid. That fight is heating up again, by the way; the company that makes natural thyroid has been having problems with production, and the medication is back-ordered at many pharmacies. Some pharmacies have stopped even ordering it. Others have sporadic shipments. This has created a situation in which some thyroid patients are having to call around to multiple pharmacies to make sure the pharmacy has some of the medication first. What I was doing was calling pharmacies, finding out what they have on the shelves, then calling my doctor, who would write out a prescription based on what is available. Many patients are doing this; there are people taking one-and-one-eighth pills, one pill one day and ¾ of a pill the next, and so on. At present I’m taking a natural thyroid supplement that is compounded at a pharmacy that takes orders for custom prescriptions. That could be jeopardized at any time, though, because as shortages continue, patients on natural thyroid go looking for other sources, and then there is competition for the natural thyroid that is available.

On the scale of Calamities, this one isn’t that bad; much worse things can happen to a person, but this is what’s happening to me, my personal calamity. I have some other medical issues, but those, and how they are being dealt with, well…I’ll wait and address those in some other posts.

It's About the Knitting!

Gather round, little lambs. At this time of celebrity awarding, in the Church of Fiber, where there is room for All, it is time to talk about Knitting.




To those of you who have been quietly knitting for decades, joyful and unrecognized: you who have been discreetly slipping handmade booties into the hands of new mothers; enclosing the hands of children in warm mittens; sending families out to fight the good fight in handmade sweaters, hats, and socks; and enveloping the generations in that combination of warmth and family history commonly known as the afghan, to you it is given to hold a good portion of all the magic that is left in the world. You have persevered when there were no free online patterns, when the best that could be got was rough acrylic yarn from the local dimestore, an era ere Starbucks had roasted its first bean and legal fights over the right to call two knitters in the same building a “SnB” was unheard of. Because, my sisters, we stitched, but we tried really hard not to bitch too much. And in an era that many don’t remember, when women couldn’t even get credit without a man’s signature, stitching and that afternoon Valium sure staved off the bitching. My children, you have done well; enter into your rest and be seated at the right hand of She Who Spins, where you shall never run out of really amazing yarn. And cast on that little Chanel-style jacket from the 1965 Workbasket that you never took time to start for yourself. Have a cookie. They have no calories in the Otherworld.

patterns religiously to some of the online fiber magazines: Know that you are loved. We, the tribal elders, love you, love that you are knitting, and love that you love that you are knitting. It’s about the knitting. Knitting is tangible love that you can wrap around those closest to you. It will protect them, as sure as the strongest magic, because Love is the strongest Magick, and knitting is love. Every pirate skull sock, every baby hat, every lace scarf, every man-sweater…is love. Of the purest and most unadulterated kind.



It’s not about being hip, slick, and cool. Nobody out of high school cares about being hip, slick, and cool. In the grand scheme of Time and the Universe, hipness, slickness, and coolness mean nothing. What is hip, slick, and cool today will be laughed at tomorrow. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Victorian bathing suit, the poodle skirt, and the strategically ripped sweatshirt, and there rest my case. But, we have a higher calling.



You may never be on television. Your fabulous design may never be printed in a magazine. You may never be knitting the exact same project as some celebrity. Knitting is beyond all of that. Knitting is about supplying essential care to those closest to us, and using our own talents and creativity to turn that care into an art form. There are remnants of knitted fabric that have been found in gravesites dating to the time of Christ and before. We don’t know who knit them. It could have been a noblewoman (celebrity) or a slave. But we know what inspired a pair of socks that someone would want to spend eternity in. Love.



You may never be famous for knitting. But you can knit famously. And you can be forever enshrined in hearts as a bringer of warmth and comfort to children, working people, and sick people. You can be forever deified as a bringer of beauty and solace. You can forever serve Love, which has no red carpet but bestows many awards. You can take your place in history with those who have united kings and peasants under the simple need to be clothed. You can be a knitter.
